Dearest Darlingest Trash Heads,

Apologies for unexpectedly missing last week’s dispatch. My most beloved furry feline, Jasper, had a routine dental surgery that resulted in an emergency tooth extraction and I have been an absolute disastrous mess watching him recover while also juggling a handful of restoration projects on my 1953 midcentury home (do you want to see them?) and prepping for my trip to New Orleans for the Louisiana Vintage Festival (I’m hosting a pre-party — you should come!)

We have lots of vintage finds to catch up on!

Let’s get into it.

WARNING: full autumnal vibes ahead — if you’re determined to soak up every last drop of summer, proceed with caution — there’s a crispy afternoon breeze ahead 🍂

The routine is the same every year. We’ve reached the point of summer when the idea of “pre-fall” begins to creep in, pestering your subconscious into thinking that perhaps you do *need* the new limited-edition colorway of that classic sweater, that another leather jacket could hardly hurt, and that there is, in fact, no such thing as too many pairs of jeans.

But you don’t have to give in!!!!

While there is, of course, nothing wrong with wanting something NEW on a few and far between occasion, I think we’ve become a little too accustomed to the constant churn of “add to cart” — particularly when the clothes we already own are perfectly capable of carrying us into another season (or two or three or five.)

(Not to mention, it feels very apparent that many of us are shopping for the validation that comes from owning new! hot! trending! things and showing them off on the internet — this is not the way!)

The sweaters you wore last year are probably and very much most likely still fabulous and fantastic. And if you’ve been rotating between the same two coats, now convinced that they’ve become dull and drab and lifeless, there’s a fairly easy fix that doesn’t require replacing either of them: styling them with a weird little vintage accessory.

An over-the-top extravagant brooch, an old, soft and worn-in belt, a showstopper of an earring or a stack of mixed and matched rings. Something small enough to experiment with, but interesting enough to make the familiar feel slightly new and exciting and wild and bizarre.

Sometimes the answer to wanting a new wardrobe is just looking at the one you already have a little differently.

SO here are some vintage and secondhand accessories to give your old wardrobe a new lease on life.

A New (To You) Jewel

Jewelry is probably the most fun way to tell the world what you’re into without having to say a word. It’s where personal taste gets a little louder, curious, and deeply specific.

I love meeting a new person and reading the initial charms on their necklace or seeing a brooch shaped like their favorite breed of dog or reading the engravings on a ring inherited from someone’s father’s father’s father. ‘Tis the ultimate silent storyteller!

Stack everything together, wear one very strange ring, pile on the chains, mix metals, add a charm that makes sense to nobody but you (perhaps, this one?)

The possibilities are essentially endless.

You can make the dull-boring-drab-overly-familiar clothes feel completely different just by changing what’s happening at your neck, wrists, fingers, or ears (or somewhere in-between!)

ALSO, why would you spend this much on crappy plastic fast fashion jewelry when there are HUNDREDS of thousands of delightfully delicious, decently priced, well-made secondhand options floating around the internet?

There are many reasons to shop out of season, but for me the biggest one is simply having the mental space to focus.

I like being able to dig around the depths of the internet and meditate on what’s speaking to me before there’s a frenzied buzz around “fall trends” and “must haves” and “need to buy” and everything I scroll upon has three active offers and is sitting in 15 different carts and my blood pressure starts to spike and my scarcity mindset tells me buy now! add to cart! go go go!

Buying a winter coat when it’s 100° out makes me much less likely to panic-buy something only to discover later that I skimmed the measurements, overpaid, or would’ve found something I liked better had I waded through the waters of five more pages of search results. I hate buying something fast fast fast for instant gratification only for it to die in the back of my closet.

There’s already so much clothing living on this planet!!!! It’s worth remembering that whenever the annual flood of “fall trends you need now” emails starts arriving. Many of those “trends” are simply the things people have always wanted once the air gets a little crisp: paisley prints, suedes, chunky knits, worn-in leather, a great boot. They return because they’re enduring, not because they’re new and surely don’t mean you need to buy something NEW.

Scrolling secondhand is also a useful way to check in with your own taste. If you keep stopping for the same thing over and over again, chances are that’s not an algorithm talking—it’s you. And you’ll probably love it just as much in five years.

Sorry to you summer lovers, but I’ve got fall on the brain and I’m not ashamed for thinking about cashmere and coats!

If you couldn't tell from my recent dispatches (heavy on home goods, suspiciously light on fabulous fashion finds), I am currently consumed in making my once-half-flipped millennial gray house feel like a Trash Head kind of home.

Summer is beginning its slow (or is it fast?) descent into September (sorry to you summer lovers, who loathe to be reminded of this) and I have every intention of embracing hygge this cozy season as I enter my third year as a Midwesterner.

The downside of refusing to buy overpriced veneer furniture masquerading as “timeless” heirlooms is that two years into living here, there are still rooms that feel empty and a little sad. Corners full of weird little tchotchkes waiting for the right place to land, shelves that know they're missing something, even if I don't yet know what it is.

It is an exercise in delayed gratification and oh boy, is it hard!!!

The upside is that very little in my house is linkable. There isn't an Amazon storefront dupe for my living room shelves or a viral West Elm collaboration sponsored ad for my bedroom furniture — almost everything in here has arrived via a weird Facebook marketplace interaction, scrolling 1000 pages on eBay, roaming a small town antique mall, or finding a small business tradesperson willing to make something for me. It feels distinctly ME and truly one-of-a-kind, which makes the wait feel worth it.

I consume a decent amount of design media.

World of Interiors, Cultured‘s new At Home, ’s Substack, Home Front, and more Architectural Digest Open Door tours than I care to quantify. They’re seductive! sexy! alluring! because they offer the fantasy that good taste is simply a matter of assembling the right objects. How simple!

Yet having worked in celebrity styling, I'm a little less susceptible to that illusion than I once was. I know how much editing goes into creating an aspirational image, whether it's a wardrobe or a living room. The homes in these tours are often styled specifically for the shoot, filled out with borrowed pieces or adjusted to tell a more coherent visual story than the vibrant chaos of everyday life usually allows, making us believe that you can simply acquire the vibes, rather than having to do the work to actually develop your personal taste.

Whenever I find myself on “Interior Design Tok” I am overwhelmed by the amount of people willing to furnish their entire homes around a Nancy-Meyers-collected-cottage-90s-cozy-home aesthetic rather than listening to their own instincts. It might look “nice” but it feels sterile and lifeless, even through my phone screen.

The best rooms have a pulse! They’re alive and breathing! They reveal the peculiarities of the people who live there! They’re filled with objects that earned their place rather than fulfilled a mood board.

You can admire a designer’s eye or a specific aesthetic without photocopying their entire house!!!!!!!

Let’s imagine Architectural Digest just knocked on your door and asked for a tour.

Here are three interior designers whose work I return to constantly and how I’d translate their worlds through my own lens, using vintage finds and secondhand treasures that feel special, unique, wonderful, and weird — perfect for my own personal universe.

And because we love to complete the fantasy, I’ve also included some fashion finds à la so you’re ready for your celebrity close-up.

PIERCE AND WARD

If Nancy Meyers traded New England for Laurel Canyon, the result might look something like Pierce & Ward.

She embraces textiles, patterns, and proportions in a way that feels indulgent and decadent yet also loose and casual and bohemian.

I am constantly returning to her work for inspiration and a new approach to experiencing color and texture in a room.

A Tiny History Lesson

Long before the Substack-fueled ascent of the Donni pant or the phenomenon of $900 High Sports, there was….

The Capri.

Introduced in 1948 by the German designer Sonja de Lennart, the “capri” was high-waisted, slim through the leg, and cropped just above the ankle. Named after yes, that dreamy Italian island, it offered women something that felt surprisingly new: the ease and practicality of trousers without sacrificing the elegance and refined femininity that mid-century fashion still societally demanded.

At a moment when pants remained fraught with questions of propriety, the capri managed to thread the needle, appearing modern rather than “too” masculine, relaxed rather than rebellious (but rebellious they were!!)

Their ascent into popularity owed as much to Hollywood as it did to practical, universally flattering design. When Audrey Hepburn appeared in slim black capris in Sabrina in 1954, it instantly cemented the style as a uniform for a woman who was chic without seeming to try very hard — a quality I think perhaps fashion has been trying to replicate ever since.

(If Laura Petrie taught us anything, it's that capris are best accompanied by a little dancing)

Soon Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, and a constellation of other Hollywood movie stars caught on. Television soon followed, delivering the modern look directly into American living rooms through characters like Laura Petrie (Mary Tyler Moore) on The Dick Van Dyke Show—a formative style icon for me, and perhaps one of the first examples of fashion turning something sensible into something worth coveting.

By the 1960s, capris had become associated with a new kind of femininity: confident! capable! uninterested in abiding by the old distinctions between what women were supposed to wear and what they actually wanted to wear!!! independence! a fearsome thing to behold!

The 90s Comeback

Like all garments and silhouettes that achieve such ubiquity, capris eventually receded into the background as the ’70s blossomed and women embraced waist-down rebellion in everything from bell-bottoms to balloon pants to athletic leggings.

But by the late 1990s and early aughts, capris found their way back into the fashion conversation, this time paired with baby tees, ballet flats, and the polished, sleek minimalism that defined the decade.

Fashion has a habit of returning to reinvent and revisit pieces that fulfill a genuine need, and capris continue to make a convincing case for themselves: practical, flattering, and imbued with just enough charm to make everyday dressing feel a little more intentional (and festive!)

So….how does one wear them in the year 2026?

Event season is upon us: milestone birthdays, graduations, vaguely themed warm-weather soirées, and, inevitably, the ever fashionable summer wedding are beginning to populate our calendars.

Predictably, searches for “formal dress” and “black tie outfit” begin their annual climb, reaching heights we will not seen again until holiday party season. Yet, regardless of season or occasion, the search somehow always yields the same stubborn silhouette:

Adjustable straps, polyester posing as silk, the same diluted jewel tones recycled across the same handful of brands, all at prices that seem to inflate the moment the word “wedding” enters the equation.

One starts to wonder if this category has simply accepted aesthetic stagnation as its business model… (which, obviously the answer is yes because $$$ — just take a scroll through Revolve if you don’t believe me.)

Surely we can’t go on like this forever?!

I’ve recently been on a bit of a ’90s movie binge, mourning the lost art of the 90-minute-ish romantic comedy — the kind of movie that somehow had the budget for enormous parties, even bigger wedding scenes, and was shot on location in some breathtaking scenic town.

My biggest takeaway has undoubtedly been that while everyone was clearly dressing within the aesthetic language of the decade, no two party scene guests looked remotely identical. Each outfit seemed to possess its own texture, attitude, embellishments, narrative. There was a sense that clothes had been lovingly chosen, not merely purchased out of exhausted, frustrating desperation.

I keep coming back to Julia Ormond in the 1995 remake of Sabrina, her opulent sparkling bolero over a forest-green velvet gown feels almost unimaginable now — not just the silhouette, but the richness of the fabric, the specificity of the styling, the overall sense of fancy! festive! occasion! When did this type of party dressing disappear?

The answer likely lies somewhere within the usual pile of existential complaints and cultural grievances I tend to regularly circle back to: the invention of the internet, shopping on the internet, the rise of viral trends, the Pinterest-ification of moodboarding and event planning. There is probably a very convincing “cerulean sweater”-style monologue to be made about the trickle-down effect of the coordinated bridesmaid slip dress eventually becoming the default silhouette for wedding guests at large. Somewhere along the way, we collectively accepted a remarkably narrow vision of what occasion dressing should look like.

No longer are the days of roaming Anthropologie for that perfectly unique, weird, artful dress that was sure to turn heads and collect compliments…

We! must! break! free!

The Trash Panic Guide to Fancy Festive Occasion Dressing

A small disclaimer: my feelings about the wedding industrial complex are not especially traditional. I tend to think the best ceremonies have a little bit of freaky chaos to them, and that many conventions of contemporary American wedding culture feel less romantic than dutiful, equal parts stupidly expensive and strangely antiquated.

But I also recognize that families are complicated ecosystems, built on their own expectations, obligations, and inherited rituals. So this is not a guide for the committed traditionalist. Consider it, instead, a case for approaching occasion dressing with a little more personality, and perhaps a little less obedience. Move forward with caution! (This will be more relevant when I tackle the essential characteristics of the Trash Panic Bride, next week.)

Dress Codes

And here I am, immediately contradicting myself.

For all my skepticism around tradition, I can also be annoyingly precious about terminology — something I blame on a childhood shaped by PBS Masterpiece and an enduring love for period dramas.

Do I think modern life should function exactly as it did in the past? Absolutely not.

But!! I do think there’s value in understanding where traditions come from, for better or worse…which is why I inevitably find myself on the particular corner of TikTok where people passionately debate formal dress codes and lament the fact that most Americans, or perhaps just modern generations more broadly, no longer really understand what “Black Tie” means, let alone how it differs from White Tie or Morning Dress.

Let the record show:

White tie: most formal evening dress code, requires tailcoats and white bow tie/full length evening gowns — is typically worn to royal ceremonies, state banquets, and ultra-formal galas.

Black tie: slightly less formal evening dress code, requires a tuxedo and black bow tie/full length gown or elevated cocktail dress — commonly worn to weddings, charity galas, and formal dinners.

Morning attire: most formal daytime dress code, requires a morning coat, waistcoat, tie, and striped trousers/formal daytime dress and hat — often worn to daytime weddings, formal ceremonies, and events like Royal Ascot.

That being said, I’m sure many couples assigning wedding dress codes have their own interpretations of the terms above — not to mention the modern affection for the strangely specific, occasionally absurd themed dress code (“chic western elegant cowboy mermaid” — yes, this is a real theme I once dressed a client for…) Which means the best thing you can do is become a bit of a detective, deciphering the sartorial expectations of the evening from context clues.

Look at the invitation. Think about the couple. Consider the venue, the time of the events, even the menu.

If a carrier pigeon arrived bearing a gold-gilded, wax-sealed invitation suite with three envelopes nested inside one another, it is probably safe to assume the expectation is your fanciest most festive best.

If the invite arrived via Partiful or a group text, perhaps the mood is a little more improvisational. Get a little (or a lot) freaky with it. Don’t be afraid of being overdressed; it is almost always preferable to arriving looking apologetically casual!!!

I am also a big proponent of buying occasionwear with the intention of wearing it again. This, to me, is where investing in something genuinely well-made, perhaps expensive, perhaps designer begins to make sense. You can always re-consign it later.

My grandmother had an entire section of her closet dedicated to what she simply called her “nice things”: occasion dresses and pantsuits she rewore for years, sometimes decades. Many were patterned, embellished, unmistakably memorable. The contemporary idea that an outfit becomes obsolete the moment someone has already seen you in it is deeply tied to the logic of overconsumption — it’s simply not true.

But, enough of the chit chat!

Behold — my pitch for some vibes you should consider for that summer shindig you have coming up.

Your Most Fanciest Festive Frock

Speaking of film costuming, one of my favorite looks of all time is Bette Davis in Now, Voyager, descending the staircase in an extraordinary white beaded gown with long sleeves and fantastically broad shoulders. There is something subtly commanding about 1940s eveningwear — structured, elegant, slightly severe — a shape that feels directly linked to the era’s emerging image of the self-possessed, headstrong woman carving her own path.

This silhouette was later reinterpreted throughout the 1980s, which I suspect is why many people now associate it with being dated, matronly, or overly conservative and drab. I am here to argue the opposite! It’s time to bring it back!

I’ve long believed that incorporating one-of-a-kind vintage into your wardrobe is the surest way to make it feel like your own—less rigidly assembled, more casually (but thoughtfully) accrued. There’s a particular satisfaction in being stopped on the street, someone curious enough to ask where you found that slightly unusual piece, and getting to say, “thanks, it’s vintage!”

It carries a certain implication: that your taste operates on a slightly different frequency, that what you’re wearing isn’t entirely replicable! You have achieved the ultimate goal of being truly unique!

But, acquiring said cool, one-of-a-kind piece is only half the story.

There’s a noticeable difference between discovering something you love and figuring out how to wear it in a way that feels natural within the rest of your wardrobe. Without that, even a great find can come across as a bit too deliberate—more costume than instinct.

Let me guide you!

I’ve talked about this before, so without repeating myself too much, I’ll simply recommend you start here, where I go a little deeper on where to shop, what to look for, and some other looks to try out:

But First, Hair and Make-up

One of the most important elements in making vintage feel modern rather than costume-like is how you approach your hair and makeup.

A look that’s too defined—a bold lip with a strong eye, overly set curls, heavy hairspray, or fussy accessories—can feel overly tied to a specific era and add to the “Halloween costume” feel.

A lighter touch tends to work better.

Let the vintage piece stand out, and keep everything else relatively simple: a bit of shimmer, some gloss, a small pop of color. The goal is balance, not recreating a full look from decade long gone by.

Striking ornate evening coats are no doubt having a moment in the zeitgeist, but they are a forever collector piece in my personal wardrobe, as I do believe they can, in fact, be dressed up or down — like so!

It is perhaps a universal experience, the first day the temperature inches past 65 degrees — a convincing little mirage of spring! — an immediate fantasy, a flicker of a future where you’re warmer, looser, somewhere near water, holding something delightfully cold.

But almost immediately the daydream fades into a mild, familiar dread.

What will you wear? The future of your happiness! your destiny! suddenly seems to hinge on assembling a wardrobe that reflects your imagined vacation self, no doubt shaped by afternoons spent scrolling targeted ads and sneaking glimpses of the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

You open your phone browser, type “summer wear,” and, predictably, you’re delivered straight to an endless scroll of Zara new arrivals.

Under a frenetic trance, you begin adding things to your cart with unnecessary urgency, consumed by the idea that if you buy each of these crappy, synthetic, near-identical pieces, you might feel complete.

The Ultimate It Girl.

The package arrives. You notice the lace top you spent $79.95 on already has a hole forming near the flimsy, plastic adjustable strap. You try on the $49.90 poly-blend capri pants and notice the right leg is surely an inch (or maybe even two?) longer than the left. That $129 Dôen dupe dress you just “had to have” already has two long snags, not to mention a polyester lining that static-clings to your thighs in a way that makes you want to instantly scream. The gold metal ring details on that sexy $59.90 swimsuit? Already scratched, the gold paint peeling off the sides.

Suddenly, you question whether this $900 haul was really worth it.

(It wasn’t.)

While there will always be caveats, grey areas, and a multitude of arguments to be had about fast fashion (we need size inclusivity!), the overall consensus is fairly difficult to ignore — it’s ruining the planet (and you don’t actually need any of it.)

The system is broken etc etc etc…we’ve officially arrived at a peak “everything is garbage” moment.

I cannot stress enough that uniquely, hyper-personal style does not come from scrolling an endless abyss of poorly-made dupes and virally trending pieces or copying your favorite influencer pushing constant new arrivals (maybe it’s….time to unfollow them if you’re feeling the constant urge to buy new….?)

It comes, instead, from noticing what sparks your interest while you’re digging through pages and pages of eBay, or trying out slightly unhinged search terms on The RealReal, or scouring the racks at your local thrift store. (It also comes from being offline, reading a book, trying out a new hobby, going on a walk, watching a new-to-you film, checking out a new restaurant, etc etc etc — so read this, and then go touch grass!)

This is the time of year when a sufficient dose of vitamin D makes us all briefly believe that money is not real!

But perhaps this year, is the year we indulge in some self-reflection around consumption.

In this era of internet culture, runway collections circulate in a steady loop—continuously screenshotted, restacked, pinned, and re-pinned over and over (and over). They may read as edifying inspiration, yet more often than not are destined to remain purely aspirational, never quite becoming tangible in our own wardrobes.

With one fashion week constantly collapsing into another combined with social media flattening everything into digestible content, there’s little time to properly absorb what’s showcased before it’s reinterpreted, replicated, and filtered through the fast-fashion cycle, only to be discarded as our attention span shifts once again to something newer and fresher and more viral.

Staying constantly plugged in, waiting for the next trend, the hot new item to add to cart, quietly erodes the development of taste!!! — something that has become more crave-able than ever in this stage of constant information.

Personal style *fart noise* isn’t formed at the pace of “the feed.” It comes from experimentation, discernment, and lots and lots of repetition. It requires sitting with an idea long enough to understand why it resonates, going down a research rabbit hole, study! reflection! A lack of fear to get and feel ugly! When you identify patterns in what you return to — certain proportions, textiles, colors, references — the impulse to constantly add to cart softens because you’re no longer chasing new! now! novelty!; you’re building long-lasting coherence.

SO today we’re going to dive into the fashion deep end and take a closer look at Matthieu Blazy’s introductory collections at Chanel, a study in how a house so expansive and historically loaded can be reimagined as wearable, relevant, and fresh, even while echoing the same distinguishable motifs it’s been known for since its inception. Blazy’s references nod to fashion history without getting lost in it, leaving plenty to dissect and room to layer in your own personality.

Personally, I’ve never seen myself reflected in the Chanel traditions of old — rarely in the work of Karl Lagerfeld, Virginie Viard, or even Coco Chanel. Blazy’s approach feels more open. He treats the archive as material rather than mandate. The woman he envisions feels current: composed, a little practical, slightly off-center and a little “weird” (and campy) in a way that keeps it interesting.

There’s no need to rush out and buy the most expensive, hippest, newest thing to try your hand at being a Blazy girl. There’s a sea of vintage and secondhand eager to live a new chapter of life in your closet as you channel Chanel, and I’m here to help you find it.

Let’s get into it.

THE COLOR STORY

Let’s first take a moment to admire the main colors woven throughout Blazy’s three collections thus far with Chanel. Color theory (shades/tones/pairings) is always the first thing I register when reacting to a runway show, before I even begin to study the clothes, silhouettes, or proportions, etc etc etc

It’s likely because color is what I struggle with most in my own wardrobe (and what challenged me most in art classes). I love looking at ✨COLOR✨, but combining it in unexpected, interesting ways doesn’t always come naturally to me! Being able to clearly see the key takeaway hues in a collection helps—it tells me what to look for/hunt down/how those pieces might work with what I already own and what I’m consistently drawn to.

I love that Blazy worked with variations of fundamentally the same color palette without it leaning too repetitious and boring. It makes each collection feel cohesive to one another while still showcasing different levels of occasions and dressing.

THE CHANEL LOOK

Bring back the skirt suit! Traditional Chanel suiting has felt anywhere from overly sophisticated, stuffy, and matronly to a little gaudy, flashy, and, dare I say *whispers* tacky. I love that Blazy played with textiles and proportions to make his Chanel girl feel a little artsy, a little edgy, a little effortless, and maybe even a little punk rock. (That red woven raffia suit on the right somehow manages to feel flirty/light/feminine and sexy/seductive/badass? Incroyable!)

The key is a boxier jacket on the shorter/cropped side of things (something a tailor might be able to help you with!) and a skirt length that’s either mini or midi, lean away from the traditional above the knee pencil silhouette, which will feel too mature. (You can also mix and match with similar patterns and colors, like the pink suit in the third look.)

Consider switching out the buttons for something bold, big and vintage, or adding a sparkly, textured or even rhinestoned trim (and don’t forget a big floral-esque brooch!) Maybe just take a pair of really sharp scissors and go blunt/fray the edges yourself….!

A HINT OF KITSCH, A TOUCH OF TACKY, AND ALL OVER PATTERN

I knew I really truly loved Blazy’s vision when I started noticing the repetition of novelty throughout his looks, something I haven’t really seen at Chanel, at least not this intentionally. I’m especially drawn to his commitment to matte sequins, abundant beading, and truly wacky, wild prints and patterns. That beaded dog print suit? Insane.

There’s a lot of elements here to dissect and play around with — and a boatload of vintage finds to give this same energy!

BEADS AND CROCHET AND TEXTURE GALORE

Blazy plays with texture in a way that makes every piece feel approachable, even when it’s priceless couture. The average normal human can still imagine slipping it on and feeling like ones self, which isn’t an easy feat when designing with the Chanel woman in mind.

I especially love his approach to knitwear, how he makes it feel elegant and elevated. The heavy beading and sequins show up here again, but less kitschy and more refined, opulent rather than overdone.

SILK AND SHIRTING

Blazy’s sheer chiffon looks feel a bit like quiet rebellion for the traditional Chanel woman? a house so often defined by tweed, structure, and polish, his use of translucence introduces softness and movement in a way that feels unexpectedly modern and definitely ethereal. Scrolling through old Lagerfeld collections, I never quite saw this level of fluidity.

The sheerness doesn’t read precious or overly romantic; it feels effortless, a little undone and messy! It’s perfectly imperfect. Which also goes for the boxy, untucked shirting paired with dramatic skirting.
